The Cumberland Building Society has welcomed Stuart Miller as its new Chief Executive Officer as the mutual embarks on a new chapter focused on people, community, and growth.

Stuart succeeds Des Moore and has outlined plans to strengthen the building society’s community presence, whilst continuing to deliver greater value for members.

Des, who has led the organisation through eight years of significant transformation, will step down at the end of March after supporting a smooth transition.

Bringing more than 38 years of financial services experience, Stuart has a strong track record in customer focused leadership and a passion for supporting high streets and communities.

He will guide the continued modernisation of The Cumberland’s operations while preserving its longstanding people-first ethos.

As the organisation builds on its 175 year history, it is investing in its largest ever digital transformation programme, designed to modernise its core technology platforms and offer customers greater choice in how they manage their finances - alongside the personal touch that sets The Cumberland apart.

As he begins his role, Stuart is visiting every branch of The Cumberland, meeting colleagues, customers and stakeholders to listen to and understand their needs.

Stuart Miller said: “Joining The Cumberland has felt like a natural step in my career. It’s an organisation built around people and purpose, with a culture that genuinely puts members at the heart of every decision.

“We have a real opportunity to combine that human approach with an ambitious technology journey that will support sustainable growth and deliver lasting benefits for our members and the community.”

Looking ahead, Stuart aims to continue The Cumberland’s focus on supporting its members and collaborative partnerships, believing the next decade represents an opportunity to build on the organisation’s foundations and staying true to its mutual values.

The Cumberland’s purpose driven approach has been recognised nationally. The Society recently became the first building society in the North to achieve B Corp certification, reflecting its ethical business practices, social impact and transparent reporting.

It also holds a three star ‘world class’ Best Companies accreditation for workplace culture and has achieved its sixth consecutive Feefo Platinum Trusted Service Award, recognising exceptional customer experience.

Stuart added: “These achievements reflect a strong values driven culture. They’re not just awards - they are evidence of colleagues’ commitment to doing the right thing for members and communities. I’m proud to be joining at such an important moment and look forward to building on this foundation.”
