Understanding Domestic and Financial Abuse
Domestic abuse can impact the wellbeing of victims and their families. It can be a solitary act, or a pattern of behaviour that manifests over a period of time. The abuser is often someone close to us, a loved one, family member or carer.
Examples of Domestic Abuse can include things such as:
- Controlling, intimidating, degrading and isolating someone, which is intended to apply power or control over them.
- Psychological and emotional abuse, which aims to manipulate and influence someone’s thoughts, undermine their self-worth and weaken or frighten them.
- Physical or sexual abuse.
- Harassment and stalking - Persistent unwanted attention, monitoring, or following someone.
- Online or digital abuse - Use of technology to harm, control, or harass someone.
- Gaslighting - Where an abuser makes someone doubt their own reality, memory or perception.
Examples of Financial or Economic abuse can include things such as:
- Being persuaded to make a big life decision that makes you more reliant on a person, such as taking out a joint mortgage
- A person (or people) running up debts in your name
- Having your money controlled by others
- Having your ability to work restricted
Domestic Abuse can impact the mental, emotional, physical, social, and financial wellbeing of victims and their families.
