Describe your role at The Cumberland…

I’m a senior sales manager for the intermediary lending. It's a relatively new venture for The Cumberland, so it's exciting to be part of it from beginning.

I’m part of a team that provides holiday let and residential mortgages for customers directly and via mortgage brokers. I help develop partnerships with brokers who can help in the world of Holiday Let and residential mortgages.

How has your career developed The Cumberland?

I joined as a trainee branch manager nine years ago. I completed my nine months of training and sat my exams which enabled me to provide mortgage advice before moving to my first role as a Branch Manager.

During my time as a branch Manager, I managed every branch on the West coast of Cumbria at some point during my nine years. It was a great way to start. I got to know people at all levels and built relationships. I love working here I wouldn’t be where I am now without branch experience.

I started in the Intermediary department about 14 months ago and it's great to look at where I have come from and where I’m at now.

Did you always want to work in this field?

I wanted to be a teacher when I was at school, I loved being the boss and being able to teach and help people. I think this could also be because I’m the oldest of four. When I was leaving school, it was a neighbour who introduced me to banking and I have never looked back. Banking is a good career, there is always a way to progress.

What guidance do you have for young people who aspire to work in a role like yours?

If you're thinking about leaving Cumbria, have a look at what we have to offer here first. The Cumberland is a great place to work and is a shining example of opportunities on your doorstep.

Hard work pays off, you can learn on the job. I wasn’t an A* student but I worked hard and by taking that responsibility you're able to go far.

What advice do you have for someone applying for a job at The Cumberland?

Research; don’t be afraid to call and ask questions, show willingness and be brave. Put yourself out there. I love to see people develop and seeing people do this inspires me.
