The Society was awarded the Cumbrian Newspaper Group’s Large Business of the Year award in 2008. Despite difficult market conditions, the judges recognised that the Cumberland had continued to invest in improving customer service and delivered record results.
The panel was particularly impressed that the Society launched internet banking but had remained true to its core values by combining this with the development of innovative products and services which continued to meet the needs of people within its operating area.
On presenting the award, the judges commented on the Cumberland’s commitment to providing long term value products and services for the communities in which it operates, its staff training and development and its business results particularly considering the backdrop of the economic downturn and the issues facing the banking system.
In 2008, the Cumberland also collected the ‘Editor’s Award’ at the Mortgage Finance Gazette Awards in recognition of being the smallest institution in the UK to introduce internet banking and a training programme recently undertaken to ensure it treats its customers fairly.
The judges commented on the Society’s training programme which was based on an idea that all staff should ‘treat their customer as they would expect their mother to be treated’.
The award was presented to Gary Richardson, Assistant General Manager at the Cumberland, by the editor of the Mortgage Finance Gazette, Joanne Atkin.
