The Cumberland Building Society announces new CEO
The Cumberland Building Society has today announced that Stuart Miller will take on the role as its new Chief Executive Officer, subject to regulatory approval.
Joining from Newcastle Building Society, Stuart brings over 38 years' experience in financial services and will succeed Des Moore in 2026, following eight years of impactful leadership and transformation.
Stuart, who most recently served as Chief Commercial Officer vows to carry a ‘people first’ ethos into the new era, something that the Cumberland Building Society has prided itself on for 175 years.
As Cumbria’s largest financial institution, with 31 branches across Cumbria, Northumberland, Lancashire and South-West Scotland, The Cumberland is steeped in its role as a local partner, safeguarding financial wellbeing and supporting community roots.
As incoming CEO, Stuart reinforces this vision. Known for his passion for customer relationships and his hands-on work supporting high streets and rural communities, Stuart brings invaluable experience in ensuring traditional branch services remain strong.
His role on projects, such as The Future of Rural Retail and the Government’s High Street Task Force, spearheading efforts to protect financial access in underserved regions, makes him a natural fit for The Cumberland.
“The high street matters, because it’s where communities connect,” said Stuart. “When a branch closes in a rural area it’s not just a financial service that disappears, it’s part of the social fabric.”
This philosophy is reflected with The Cumberland’s recent refurbishment of its branches in English Street, Rosehill, Egremont and Preston, a sign of commitment to customers who still rely on face-to-face service. As Stuart prepares to lead The Cumberland into the next chapter, he makes clear that his priority is to balance moving forward with personal connection.
“I’m honoured to step into this role and am grateful for the opportunity to work alongside Des during this transition,” he added. “His leadership has shaped The Cumberland’s success, and I look forward to building on that strong foundation as we move forward together.
“The Cumberland will continue to evolve, embrace new technologies, and adapt to modern challenges. But at its core, the commitment remains unchanged, human relationships, community trust, and care for members will always be the heartbeat of what we do.”
“We need to provide those human interactions to offer tailored guidance and to put a face to a name.”
The Cumberland holds a three-star “world class” accreditation from Best Companies for its workplace culture. Ranked as the second highest financial services organisation in the UK, and among the nation’s top 20 large employers.
It has also cultivated a reputation where both colleagues and members thrive. In January, the building society celebrated its fifth consecutive Feefo Platinum Trusted Service Award, an endorsement of the respect and care given to its members.
Community remains central to this approach. From modernised branches to face-to-face relationships, The Cumberland acknowledges that sometimes a friendly conversation can be as vital as financial advice.
Looking ahead, having just marked its 175th year, The Cumberland is investing in its largest-ever digital transformation programme to modernise its core technology platform to ensure it continues to meet evolving customer needs. The new banking solution will offer greater flexibility in how customers choose to manage their finances - whether online, by phone, or in branch - alongside the personal touch that sets The Cumberland apart.
