Please call your local branch to book an appointment. Unfortunately we are unable to accept face-to-face appointments at this time, however you can book a call to discuss your savings options.

What do I need to open a savings account?

Unless you have an account with us already, we will need you to provide proof of your identity and evidence of your address. Acceptable documents include:

* Current valid signed passport
* Current UK photocard driving licence
* Firearms certificate or shotgun licence
* A blue disabled drivers pass
* An EU photocard driving licence

*Recent utility bill dated within the last six months (mobile phone bills cannot be accepted though)
* A council tax bill valid for the current year
* Bank, building society or credit union statement dated within the last six months

If you do not have any of the above, please contact us before you visit for details of alternative documentation.

We may also verify your identity and address by making searches about you at credit reference agencies who supply us information, including information from the Electoral Roll.

Can I apply for an account online?

Yes, Cumberland Plus and Freedom Apprentice current account holders can apply for a savings account through Internet Banking.

  • What happens in the branch appointment?

    In the branch appointment, we will quickly take down some essential details, and open your new savings account. We can give you advice on the best way to manage your money if you need it.

  • What is your operating area?

    Our savings accounts are available in our core operating area, which is:

    • Cumbria (all CA and LA postcodes),
    • South-West Scotland (all DG postcodes and TD9),
    • West Northumberland (NE45-49)
    • North Lancashire (all PR, FY, LA AND BB1-3 and BB5-7).
  • Is it easy to switch from another provider?

    Yes, you can switch your savings account to us from another provider, and our branch teams will be able to advise you on this.

Your eligible deposits with Cumberland Building Society are protected up to a total of £85,000 by the Financial Services Compensation Scheme, the UK's deposit protection scheme. Any deposits you hold above the limit are unlikely to be covered.
