Cumbrian hospitality businesses are well represented on the National Staycation Awards shortlist

Published on 24 October 2019

We love any excuse to celebrate Cumbrian businesses, and our customers’ successes.

So we were excited to hear this week that two of our business customers have been shortlisted for the i Newspaper’s National Staycation Awards.

A Corner of Eden – holiday cottages

Debbie and Richard, owners of A Corner of Eden’s luxurious self catering cottages (just down the road from Kirkby Stephen) are celebrating being shortlisted for not one, but two categories - ‘Self-catering Accommodation Provider of the Year’ and ‘Dog-friendly Accommodation of the Year’.

Over the last 14 years they have lovingly converted the old Georgian Farmhouse, transformed a redundant barn into eco-chic accommodation that sleeps 6, and also created a rustic Shepherd’s Cottage which provides a cosy romantic retreat for two, with a quirky outdoor roll-top bath in the walled garden.

Their success is reflected in high year-round occupancy levels and many returning guests.

Debbie and Richard said: “We are over the moon to have been shortlisted, it shows the hard work and care that our family & loyal cleaning team have put in over the years, and it’s great to be recognised in a national award. We can only hope and keep our fingers crossed that we might be selected as the overall winner in at least one of the categories.”

David from our commercial lending team has worked with Debbie and Richard from the very start of their journey in 2005, joining the couple at the property auction where they bought what was then a derelict farmhouse. Read about how they created A Corner of Eden, or watch their interview.

Brownber Hall – guesthouse

Amanda and Peter, owners of Brownber Hall – a boutique guesthouse, also near Kirkby Stephen – are delighted to have been shortlisted for the Best Hotel.

They took over the guesthouse in 2016, embarking on a complete lifestyle change, and taking on their first hospitality business. It’s been fantastic to see their vision come to life, and the business thrive since then.

Their hard work and flair for hospitality is evident, and it’s great to see this recognized.

We’ve supported Brownber Hall since Peter and Amanda took over the business. We spoke to them a year into their venture to find out about the challenges and rewards of entering into the hospitality business. Read their story, or watch their interview.

Joining Brownber Hall and A Corner of Eden are a selection of other fantastic Cumbrian businesses, showcasing what the county has to offer, including Newbiggin-on-Lune,foodie favourites Black Bull, Sedbergh and Low Sizergh Barn, Kendal and Riverside Terrace, Ambleside.

The National Staycation Awards have been launched in recognition of the growing demand for top-quality staycation holidays and to offer a chance to celebrate the UK’s most loved holiday spots as well as the great variety of people, businesses and brands which make the UK domestic travel industry such a success.
