HMRC - loss of Child Benefit records
On 20 November 2007, it was announced that Her Majesty's Revenue and Customs (HMRC) has lost two CDs containing information on all people who receive Child Benefit. It was reported that the CDs were lost in transit between Newcastle and London.
The records contained on the CDs include personal information relating to the people who receive Child Benefit, including name and address, date of birth, National Insurance number, bank or building society account number, children's names and their dates of birth.
No action is required by Cumberland customers because the risk of fraud is very low. If any Cumberland customers become a victim of fraud on their Cumberland account, they should report this to us immediately, either by contacting any Cumberland branch or telephoning 0845 601 8396. Once we have established that the fraud is linked to this loss of data, we will fully reimburse their account.
It is important for people to continue being vigilant as normal by closely monitoring their accounts to detect any potentially fraudulent activity.
