In 2006, Cumberland Building Society was What Mortgage’s regional lender of the year in the important ten year category.

This prestigious award is based on the true cost to customers over a ten year period and demonstrates the Society's consistency and long term commitment to delivering value for money.

This award came as no surprise to the Society's long-standing borrowers, who year after year have enjoyed the benefit of low monthly payments as a result of our commitment to low mortgage rates.

This award may however have been a surprise to those who have not yet come across the Cumberland.

Although mainly lending to people who live and work in Cumbria, Dumfriesshire and North Lancashire, we do provide mortgages throughout England, Scotland and Wales through a call centre based at our head office in Carlisle.

The Cumberland Building Society has also picked up a national award for its service to the local community.

The Society collected the Community Service award for regional lenders at the 2006 Mortgage Finance Gazette Awards.  This recognises the Cumberland’s contribution to the local area through the development of Community Branches and its support for other community events

The Cumberland has designated five of its smaller branches as ‘Community Branches’.  These are mainly in rural locations and are designed to provide free services to the local community and support regional business.

As well as continuing to provide a full building society and banking service, the range of services includes a free fax service, designated window display space to promote local businesses or events, a box office selling tickets for local events and an appeal collection point.

Larger branches also offer floor space to mount exhibitions, sell local produce and promote other items of local interest.  Free Internet access is also available in one of the branches.

These services are available to all local residents irrespective of whether they are a member of the Society.
